Whitby Lobster Hatchery – Charity Brand Development & Environmental Branding
Whitby Lobster Hatchery is a marine conservation charity working to protect Yorkshire's fishing heritage and support the sustainability of local lobster populations.
Through lobster conservation, education and its Marine Discovery Centre, the organisation aims to enrich the natural environment, maintain ecological balance and help safeguard the future of the local fishing industry.
Fitzpatrick Design worked closely with the Whitby Lobster Hatchery team for more than a year to develop an adaptable brand identity, marketing materials and website that could communicate its conservation mission to visitors, supporters, partners and the wider community.

THE BRIEF
As a new charity, Whitby Lobster Hatchery needed to establish a strong and recognisable identity from the outset.
The brand needed to communicate an important environmental mission while remaining engaging, accessible and relevant to a broad audience — from the local fishing community and conservation partners to supporters, families and visitors to Whitby.
It also needed the flexibility to work across the charity's growing range of communications, including marketing materials, digital channels and its website.
THE CREATIVE APPROACH
We worked closely with the Whitby Lobster Hatchery team to understand the organisation's ambitions, audiences and connection to Whitby's fishing heritage.
A number of creative routes were explored before developing an adaptable identity system capable of communicating both the environmental purpose of the charity and its public-facing personality.
The resulting visual language provided a distinctive and flexible foundation that could work consistently across print, marketing communications and digital applications.
BRANDING A VISITOR & EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Alongside its conservation work, Whitby Lobster Hatchery's Marine Discovery Centre provides another important way for the organisation to engage people with marine conservation and Yorkshire's fishing heritage.
The wider identity therefore needed to work not only as a charity brand but as part of an engaging public-facing organisation capable of connecting with visitors, families, supporters and the local community.
This broader perspective helped create a brand with the flexibility to support conservation, education and visitor engagement under one recognisable identity.
THE RESULT
The project gave Whitby Lobster Hatchery a distinctive and professional identity with the flexibility to support the organisation as it developed.
By creating the brand identity, marketing materials and website as part of one coherent visual system, we helped establish a consistent presence across print and digital communications.
The response to the identity has been extremely positive, with the Whitby Lobster Hatchery team reporting frequent compliments about the strength of the brand image and its professional website.
CHARITY & ENVIRONMENTAL BRANDING
Purpose-led organisations need brands that do more than simply identify them.
For environmental charities and conservation organisations, a strong identity can help explain complex issues, engage different audiences and create a recognisable platform for fundraising, education, partnerships and public engagement.
For Whitby Lobster Hatchery, the identity needed to bring together conservation, fishing heritage, education and tourism within one coherent brand.
The result was a visual system designed to communicate the organisation's purpose clearly while remaining approachable and engaging.
BRAND IDENTITY ACROSS EVERY TOUCHPOINT
An effective charity brand needs to remain recognisable wherever people encounter the organisation.
The Whitby Lobster Hatchery identity was designed as an adaptable system rather than simply a standalone logo, allowing it to work consistently across marketing materials, printed communications, digital content and the website.
This flexibility created a stronger and more coherent presence while giving the organisation a practical visual foundation for future growth.
WEBSITE & DIGITAL DESIGN
For a new charity, establishing a strong digital presence was an important part of building awareness and communicating its mission.
We developed the Whitby Lobster Hatchery website as an extension of the wider brand identity, creating a professional digital platform through which the organisation could explain its work, communicate its ambitions and engage visitors and supporters.
By developing the brand and digital presence together, the visual identity could remain consistent across both physical and online communications.
"As a new charity we were keen to start building our brand and digital presence. Working with Fitzpatrick design to achieve this was amazing. they developed a number of exciting creative routes and took time to ensure we were happy with the results."
