Stephen Joseph Theatre – Hospitality & Cultural Venue Branding
The Stephen Joseph Theatre is one of Scarborough's best-known cultural venues, renowned for its theatre-in-the-round and its home within the town's distinctive former Art Deco Odeon cinema.
Fitzpatrick Design was commissioned by Yorkshire Coast Homes to develop the branding for a new restaurant and retail venture within the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
Working closely with the management team, we developed names for the venues before creating a range of distinctive brand identities inspired by the character and Art Deco heritage of the theatre.
The resulting identities were applied across menus, signage, staff uniforms and print and digital marketing materials, creating a cohesive customer experience within one of North Yorkshire's most recognisable cultural destinations.

THE BRIEF
Introducing new restaurant and retail concepts within an established cultural venue creates an interesting branding challenge.
The new ventures needed their own identities and personalities while feeling completely at home within the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
The theatre's distinctive Art Deco architecture provided a strong visual context, so the branding needed to complement the character and heritage of the building without simply reproducing it.
Working closely with the management team, our role was to develop names and visual identities that could give the new venues a distinctive presence while remaining sympathetic to their surroundings.
THE CREATIVE APPROACH
Our starting point was the theatre itself.
Its Art Deco heritage provided inspiration for the typography, graphic styling and wider visual language, allowing us to develop identities that felt appropriate to the environment while retaining their own individual character.
The project began with naming before progressing into logo development and the creation of a broader visual identity.
We then considered how those identities would work in practice across the many different touchpoints encountered by customers within the venue.
This created a cohesive brand experience rather than a collection of unrelated individual applications.
BRAND NAMING & IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT
Creating a new hospitality or retail concept begins long before designing the logo.
The name establishes personality and provides the foundation around which the wider brand can develop.
For the Stephen Joseph Theatre project, Fitzpatrick Design worked with the management team to devise names for the new venues before developing individual visual identities around them.
This allowed the naming and design process to work together, creating concepts with a clearer and more distinctive personality.
THE RESULT
The project created distinctive identities for the Stephen Joseph Theatre's new restaurant and retail ventures, providing each with its own personality while remaining sympathetic to the theatre's Art Deco surroundings.
The branding extended consistently across physical and digital touchpoints, from menus and signage to staff uniforms and marketing communications.
Most importantly, the finished identities successfully translated the management team's initial aspirations into tangible brands that they were proud to introduce within the theatre.
“Fitzpatrick Design successfully transformed our aspirations and ideals into a fantastic brand, often working with a minimal brief and turning concepts around in hours. We are very proud of the finished product and would recommend Fitzpatrick Design to others without hesitation.”

HOSPITALITY & RESTAURANT BRANDING
Hospitality branding needs to influence how a venue feels as well as how it looks.
Menus, signage, uniforms, printed materials and environmental graphics all contribute to the customer's perception of a restaurant, café or bar.
For the Stephen Joseph Theatre project, the identity was developed with these different applications in mind from the outset.
This helped create a consistent visual experience across the hospitality environment while allowing the branding to complement the distinctive setting of the theatre.
CULTURAL VENUE BRANDING
Museums, theatres, galleries and cultural destinations often combine multiple experiences within a single venue.
Visitors may interact with performances, exhibitions, restaurants, cafés, shops and other facilities during the same visit, making clear and consistent branding particularly important.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre project demonstrates how individual hospitality and retail concepts can develop their own identities while remaining sensitive to the character of the wider cultural destination.
ART DECO INSPIRED BRAND DESIGN
The architecture and heritage of a location can provide a powerful starting point for brand development.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre occupies a distinctive former Art Deco cinema, giving the project an existing visual character from which to draw inspiration.
Rather than treating the new restaurant and retail ventures independently of their surroundings, we developed branding that acknowledged the theatre's Art Deco aesthetic and helped the concepts feel naturally integrated into the building.
BRAND IDENTITY ACROSS EVERY TOUCHPOINT
A successful hospitality identity needs to remain recognisable wherever customers encounter it.
Following development of the names and logos, the new identities were extended across menus, signage, staff uniforms and a range of printed and digital marketing materials.
Applying the visual language consistently across these touchpoints helped create a stronger and more coherent customer experience.
It also provided the management team with a flexible identity capable of working across both operational and promotional communications.
MENU, SIGNAGE & UNIFORM DESIGN
Menus, signage and uniforms are particularly important within hospitality because they place the brand directly into the customer experience.
For the Stephen Joseph Theatre project, each provided an opportunity to reinforce the identity while fulfilling a practical purpose.
Together with wider print and digital marketing materials, these applications helped bring the new concepts to life within the physical environment.
